Capacity-Building Workshop on Inclusivity

Making opera and dance more diverse and inclusive requires, beyond a change led by top managers, empowering artists and creatives to become agents of change within their organisations. As part of the Next Stage initiative, and with the support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, FEDORA offers professional training for emerging artists and creatives to stimulate innovation in opera and dance, in the fields of sustainability, inclusivity and digital transformation to representatives from our 31 Platform Members.

On 13 September 2022, FEDORA held a full-day workshop in collaboration with BPI (Business Performance Institute) on “Attraction: Helping a broader diversity of candidates access the casting and hiring process”. The session focused on the current barriers to access careers in the performing arts, whether financial, regarding location or current practices, and was moderated by Johanna Reiss, Junior Partner, and Adam Kratoska, Learning Consultant.

Following ice-breaking exercises that helped participants to empathise with the challenges related to diversity and inclusivity when recruiting in the performing arts sector, they alternated between assembly and sub-group discussions. As a guest speaker, we welcomed Edie Culshaw, Head of Trusts from Sadler’s Wells Theatre, who presented their program STEP (Shared Training and Employment Programme), a 12-month paid traineeship, designed to encourage a collaborative approach to changing the workforce demographic landscape in the arts.
